I’ll start by telling you that after some self reflection i can say for sure that a lot of the reasoning behind my first choice (surgery) is supported by an unresolved necessity to impress my family. that being said, i’m well aware this is not a healthy way of choosing a specialty lol. which is my i’m giving some serious thought about. We are the only specialty that prescribes medications, dispenses medications, mixes and prepares medications, then administers medications all independently. every other specialty needs a doc to write order, pharmacy to check doses and mix medications, a nurse to check again and administer to patient. we never have to wait for results. For a practical way to pick your physician specialty, study the data. finding the right physician specialty is a matter of knowing what you want to do, but it’s also about knowing where you are wanted. pursuing a medical or surgical specialty because of perceived prestige or competitiveness doesn’t make for a fulfilling career.
