I suspect it's a couple things. 1.) the maps are based on some sort of propagation modelling software and it's a bit overly optimistic. probably only factoring for xdb of attenuation per km but not really factoring for buildings or any sort of extensive multipath. 2.). The new maps make bold claims. verizon now has some 5g in 18 cities, and it says it will have 30 by the end of the year. at least outdoors, verizon says it covers almost all of downtown boise.
