In keeping with the lower average age of the chinese international student population over time and rising tension in u.s. china relations, there was a drop in the number of students who stayed on to become u.s. citizens over the decades – from 71 percent in the first cohort of 1991 2004 graduates to 30 percent in the second cohort.
