Try using a quarter as many pixels, or even less! you're right about that, i usually work with a lot of detail that i'm afraid to lose. i should probably embrace the limitations also, you use a lot of colors. for a portrait like this, try limiting yourself to 8 or even 4 colors. No but really this is just stunning, drawing or painting a self portrait is difficult as it is, but doing pixel art self portrait is just another level. the composition, background, face expression and especially the lighting is what brings it all together. great job! edit: the hair also looks spot on. 3.
