I usually start by drawing them in my current style (if it's old art) it really helps seeing how would you draw the oc now before redesigning them. for the redesigning itself though id suggest picking a more cohesive color pallete and or spreading them out more evenly throughout the design (example adding the brown of the shoes to the head by.
