My very first experience with painting minis was heroquest, which i bought purely out of nostalgia. i used a white primer for that one, but when i decided to get into 40k i wanted to get around my limited painting skills (and mildly shaky hands) with a little trick: i used a black primer, then simply added some mephiston red on the helmets, and a few other parts of the armor, for a pretty cool.
