Mandala Art Easy Design Using Geometry Shapes Maths Art Integrated Step by step very easy mandala art design (colorful) aim of this art integrated activity is to understand mandala art, its meaning, history and use of conc. Students explore geometry and art by creating asymmetrical starburst designs! 1. draw a line segment 3 to 5 inches long in the center of the paper. 2. make dots around the line segment. (no dots on the horizontal line) 10 dots (5 above, 5 below for younger students 15 20 dots for older students) 3. Draw students’ attention to how the artist uses line and shape to make the mandala (observations could include circles within circles, repeating designs, etc.). explain to students that mandala art is an art form that dates back to 500 bce in india. tell students that they will be creating their own mandalas using mathematical concepts. Mandalas are rich in mathematics (circle geometry, reflective and rotational symmetry), and provide useful practice with geometry tools including rulers, compasses and protractors. several teachers have asked how to introduce the activity to their students, so i have decided to collate the ideas and resources from my original twitter thread.

Students could: math. e.g., circle (concentric), triangles and other polygons, symmetry, angles, patterns, etc. apply geometrical knowledge of circles and other shapes to design a mandala. arts. discuss the significance of colour, self expression, and symbolism. learn about mandala patterns used by different civilizations. Objectives: students will use formulas for area and circumference of a circle to develop a mandala. students will demonstrate understanding of the principles of symmetry, repetition, pattern, and shape through the design of their mandala. students will use at least three different sized shapes and calculate the area of each.
