M31 Andromeda Galaxy With Dslr R Astrophotography M31 at 500mm with a dslr. hi guys. this is my first image of the andromeda galaxy using a tracking mount the astrotrac tt320x ag, which i purchased earlier this year. i've seen better images of m31 on this forum for sure, but i thought it turned out decent. i'm still not a pro when it comes to processing, but i am learning more and more. My first post to r astrophotography. i started astrophotography back in august and have been learning ever since. so far this is my best photo i've taken, which i took on 10 10 2020. equipment used. telescope: ts optics photoline 72mm apo with tsflat72 mount: sky watcher heq5 camera: nikon d5300 (unmodded).

Using the astrophotography "500 rule" and, let's say, a 100mm lens, theoretically, you can photograph the m31 without an equatorial mount. calculate exposure time (500 100 = 5s), set a very high iso, and you are done. but the truth is, you won't capture any details on such a short exposure time like this.
