Flathead Ford Thermostat Retrofit For Overheating
Flathead Ford Thermostat Retrofit For Overheating Youtube No thermostats on model 18. however big improvement with these in line vintage dole housings, fitted with modern 180° ford mustang v8 2011 thermostats. smaller brass tube is for bypass down to water inlet, bigger one is for better cylinder head cooling (water extraction from back of head). works just perfect. Install a 4lb cap on the thing and also a 2 4lb pressure relief valve on the overflow tube. a brake pressure relief valve works for this. it will prevent high pressure fluid loss at speed and increase the boiling point slightly at the same time. average temp at high speed is dependent on the outside temp.
1949 1953 Flathead Ford V8 Thermostat Over the years hot rodders have wrestled with overheating flathead motors, and in fairness, cooling any hot rod motor was an issue. cooling an engine is this simple: the engine is a heat producer. The cooling system is obviously in very good condition, able to keep the flatty well below overheating even in very high outside temperatures. my question is, what exactly is the correct operating temperature for my flatty and should i go to a higher temperature thermostat as the engine seems to run better when it is at a higher operating temp. Re: 49 v8 flathead thermostat late opening. an f1 should have a pressure cap (3 1 2 to 4 1 2 psi). 200 to 210 is not overheating in my book. on the thermostats, i would go the other direction and run a 180 or 185 (ford spec was 177 182). 160 in not high enough temp for normal driving. Ford flathead v8 thermostat installation a better procedure for cooling and not damaging housing.
