Adding a dro to atlas lathe. ebay and other websites are alive with chinese dro's at a very reasonable price, typically under $200. i decided it was time to upgrade my ancient atlas 10x36 lathe and purchased one. i opted for 150mm travel on the cross slide and 450mm on the carriage. the dro i purchased was a 3y model kl2adr two axis display.
The Z Axis Drive System With The Drive Belt Path Highlighted Don't know what dro you are planning to use but the igaging dro's are commonly used on the atlas craftsman lathes. here is a video (not mine) that shows one way of mounting the dro to the cross slide. this is basically how i mounted mine and it works well unless you want to use a taper attachment. x axis dro for my atlas th54 lathe. Here it is with the cover on. i bent some sheet metal: here's a close up of the attachment method. i used the existing screw at left and used a smaller diameter screw (at right) through the hole used for the original cover. here's a view of the long axis. i mounted the bracket to the slide using the existing screws. Jul 11, 2013. #1. craftsman atlas 12". finally i have both "x" and "y" dros mounted and operating on my the 12" atlas craftsman lathe. the bed travel on mine is about 42 inches so i installed the 36" long dro scale. its actually about 40" long. i made a "z" shaped bracket that i had to weld one leg onto that mounts on the back of the carriage. Mine does it in slow feed(.0001 to .005 inch rev)only in the z axis (x axis is fine) was itermittent but now it's almost all the time. i start the lathe and i can only do 1 2 parts and then as soon as it gets hot a bit it seems this problem kick in. rapid or high feed moves are ok.
